Destination
Everywhere in Tysnes you will find forest roads and trails for both short and longer hikes. Here are some selected options for inspiration.
Tysnessåto 753 m above sea level
Tysnessåto is Tysnes' highest mountain peak and one of the most popular hiking destinations on the island. Here you get fantastic views in all directions. There are many paths to the top, and the shortest (and steepest) is from Myrdal on Sherpasti. We highly recommend combining this trip with pizza at Myrdal Farm during the summer months.
If you want a gentler and less challenging route, you can walk from Solheimsdalen, where there is a parking lot at Skjolda. There are also marked trails from Dalen, Gjerstad and Skaret.
Hovlandsnuten 727 m.
Hovlandsnuten is perhaps the mountain peak in Tysnes that offers the most spectacular view. Here you can practically sit and dangle your legs and look down on the villages of Hovland and Tveit, while admiring the sharp Kvinnherad mountains on the other side of the Onarheimsfjord.
One of the most used hiking trails to Hovlandsnuten runs from Skaret on county road 78 between Lunde and Nymark. The first half hour is on a nice forest road to Vasstøl, before you continue on a steep path towards Hovlandsnuten. Slightly flatter just before the summit. As an alternative, you can go from Vasstøl via Idlekleiv and Etlådna.
Another nice marked route goes from Årbakki. You can find a closer description of the tours from Skaret and Årbakki via the button below.
Ramnanuten 266 moh
A summit hike that will reward you for your efforts. There is a marked trail from Tysnes school, and you can get to the top in about 30 minutes. It is walking distance from Våge harbor to the starting point, so this is a nice hike for boat tourists.
The hike is mostly on a path, but there are also rocky sections. If you want to go down a different way for variety, follow the path on the north side of the peak (opposite where you came up).
The End of the World
Easy and enjoyable hike in the Godøysund area. It is dry and nice to walk here all year round. The hike is not marked, but it is not that difficult to find if you follow the description below. Park at the large turning area on the right just before Gåsevik pier and Godøysund Bridge. Once you have crossed the bridge, continue almost straight ahead on a gravel road for about 70 meters and take a clear path to the left. Gradually you will pass a beautiful lagoon on the left, before the path continues up into the forest. When you approach a kind of summit point (and an old root veldt) you must be careful to turn left at the crossroads. Soon you will come to a small bridge that takes you across to Maurholmen. From here it is easy to see where you are going. Enjoy the peace of the forest between crooked pine trees, before you soon arrive at the beautiful viewpoint Verdens Ende. Feel free to have a picnic on the beautiful beach that is nearby.
Blueberry Hill 297 m.
A hiking destination in Onarheim that is suitable for most people, as it is a gravel "highway" the whole way. There is a fair amount of climbing, but not much more than that many people do this hike with a stroller.
The start is at the parking lot on the way to Storesætre. At the top you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Onarheimsfjorden and Kvinnherad. There are both a shelter, an outdoor toilet, benches and a fire pit at Blåbærhaugen. If you sign up for the tour, Alsaker Fjordbruk Onarheim Sports Club will sponsor you with 20 kroner.
Day trip cabin "Miklastofa"
By Kyrkjevatnet in Uggdal lies Tysnes Municipality's beautiful day trip cabin. It is a low-threshold facility that is free for everyone to use, and has a universal design. The surrounding area invites you to relax, and there is an activity park, a bathing jetty, a gazebo and a toilet nearby. Inside the cabin there is a nice loft, books, benches and a stove. Here you can enjoy the outdoors in shelter from the weather. Or maybe you want to use a fire pan for grilling?
It doesn't take many minutes to get to "Miklastofa", and there are several different routes to choose from. You can park and start the hike from Uggdalseidet (at the southern end of the lake), on the hilltop past Optimera at Heningen, or from the riding arena at Myklestad (past Uggdal church).
Steinåsen 216 m.
An easy hike that suits most people. Take the forest road that starts to the left of the industrial building just by the Malkeneskrysset intersection, where there is a large parking lot.
The forest road is a round trip, and you can walk either way to find signs for Steinåsen (which is a detour). It takes less than an hour from the start to Steinåsen.
Gjerstadstølen 333 m.
Støl area is a great hiking destination for the whole family. There are marked trails from Dalen (shortest route), Solheimsdalen and Gjerstad. At the peaceful and beautiful Gjerstadstølen you can take a break on the benches while enjoying the view of old seals, the lake and mountains.
From Gjerstadstølen you can, among other things, continue to the hiking destinations Svartavatnet and Tuvefjellet, or all the way to Tysnessåto.
The fishing lake around
Easy and idyllic walk in Lunde that goes past the beautiful Bakkafossen and along the river to Fiskevatnet. Park at Bunnpris and find the hiking trail that starts right behind the center, between the kindergarten and a house. Follow the markings towards Bakkafossen. There is a path on both sides of the river from the waterfall, and down towards beautiful Fiskevatnet. Then follow the path to the main road at Grimsland or the memorial, and take the road back to the center.
Wear good shoes, preferably boots.
Teiglandsnuten/Vestrefjellet 340 m above sea level
Like Ramnanuten, this is also a hike that you can take within walking distance of Våge. At the top you get magnificent views in all directions, and it is especially beautiful to look down on Tysnesbygda and the surrounding islands, with the ferry coming and going.
First walk from Våge to Lande, the shortest from the quay is the footpath up at Teiglandsvegen 4. At the highest house on Landavegen you follow the forest road (with a barrier). The last part is a steep path. Mostly quite dry to walk.
Vasstølstjødno
Family-friendly hike to an idyllic lake that gives you a bit of a mountain feel. Park at Skaret and follow the forest road uphill. After a few minutes you will have beautiful Fossane on your right. You will soon meet the river that leads down to the waterfall again on the approximately 1 km long hike. It takes about half an hour to walk to Vasstøl. You walk mostly uphill, but there are also a few flat sections. At Vasstøl there is a barbecue, a gazebo and a small dinghy that you can borrow. In the lake you can fish for rainbow trout.
If you want to spend the night in a tent, the grassy plain along one side of the lake is well suited.
The ladder of breath
Ådnastegen is an idyllic spot in Tysnesfjellet where you can truly find peace. A great place to take a breather before continuing on to, for example, Tysnessåto, Etlådna or Hovlandsnuten.
To Ådnastegen there is a marked path from Skaret via Vasstøl, and from Tverrelva. It is also a short walk from Grovatnet. Another alternative is to climb the lion steps from Myrdal, and walk into the myranes from the top of Buskaret. PS: It is possible to rent a "ski cabin" on Ådnastegen. See more under accommodation.
Kyrkjefjellet 332 m.
An easy hike in nice terrain, where you end up with great views of, among other things, Onarheimsfjorden and Hovlandsnuten. The start is from Skaret, on the east side of the road (opposite the road to Vasstøl/Hovlandsnuten).
A good forest road leads you up to the pine forest, and then on a fairly dry and nice trail. At a leisurely pace, it takes a good half hour to reach the top.
Frøkedalsvatnet around
Nice circular trail (5 km) on Reksteren. The hike starts from the municipal parking lot at the Sør-Reksteren cemetery. Walk about 1 km on the county road to the outlet of Frøkedalsvatnet. There you turn off the road and follow the marked trail about 1.5 km to the bottom of the lake. From here there is a detour to the place where gold was mined in the early 1900s. The hike continues along the lake, into Veavikja and over Veamyra. Here you just have to follow the markings until you cross the Frøkedalselva and turn right on the municipal road down to Frøkedalskrysset. From there it is a short walk back to the parking lot. There is the possibility of both swimming and fishing in several places along this hike. Frøkedalsvatnet has a large population of small trout, which are very willing to bite all year round.
Gjøvågsvarden 306 m.
The path here starts about 50 m before the Gjøvåg/Kaldafoss junction. The first part follows a road from the 19th century. Just after an old bridge made of stone slabs, the path turns to the right and climbs quickly up the hill, to about 200 m above sea level and a good view to the west and north. From the hill, the path flattens out somewhat towards Gjøvågsvarden.
At the top you have a good view of Sotra and the city mountains in Bergen, towards Folgefonna and to the west over the entire Austevoll, which shields Reksteren from the North Sea behind.
The Grovatnet
Park at Skjolda at the top of Solheimsdalen, and follow the paved construction road to the ski resort. Keep left and continue on the forest road. Continue on the forest road at the crossroads after 2.2 km (here the path to Tysnessåto via Malkenesdalen goes up to the left). From the end of the forest road the walk goes over a bog before entering a nice birch forest.
Grovatnet is a great starting point for other hiking destinations in Tysnesfjellet, such as Ådnastegen, Tysnessåto and Etlådna.
Salzburg 409 m above sea level
About 4.8 kilometers south of Fv 78 from Onarheim church (towards Hodnanes), there is a parking lot by the road. The marked trail to Salsborg starts at an information sign.
The first part of the hike goes up the steep Setrabrekko. Along the route you alternate between walking through deciduous and pine forests, over bogs, and gentle and steep terrain. Near the top you pass idyllic Salsborgtjødno. At the very top there are views in all directions, and you can see almost all of Sunnhordland.
Ile Mountain 444 m.
Ilefjellet is a popular mountain peak where you can enjoy beautiful views down towards Våge and Bjørnafjorden.
From Våge in the north you can walk up from the Vågsmarka construction site, past Vågstjødna and on the path to the top. From the south you can walk from Dalen, where the path is well marked. You can also walk from Andersland.
Hovda 268 m.
Start at the trail sign at the memorial in Humlevik, where it is easy to park, or walk into Sanddalen at Belt. The latter option is on a tractor road and then an easy path, while the former has slightly more demanding terrain. At the top there is a beautiful view of Lundebygda, Bjørnafjorden, Os and Fusa.
